Recently remodeled and looking great. Ultra modern yet somewhat municipal and all-in-all very "Ashiya." This is a city run hot spring. Built to serve the locals after the Great Hanshin Earthquake while the water system was being repaired. I originally went here when the original prefab building housed the baths. Since then they reopened in a more permanent building on the same site. There's a hot spring here that fills the two very well designed tubs. Also there's a filling station to take the spring water home for use in your own bath and a free foot bath outside.

Since this is publicly owned by the city of Ashiya, residents get a discount. Those living outside of Ashiya have to pay the full price. Like Tokiwa-Yu in Kobe, this is a living reminder of the Great Hanshin Earthquake and worth checking out for that reason alone.

A very unique hot spring feeds the beautiful baths here in rural Miki. The carbon dioxide spring is one of the rarest and strongest of it's type in Japan. You cannot spend too long in the hot spring baths here because of the carbon dioxide being emitted by the spring water. Signs posted all over the baths say don't stay in for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is that there is so much carbon dioxide coming off the water you don't breath in enough oxygen and can faint.

Besides that the gasses that could kill you, the water feels great. The landscaping in the outdoor area is beautiful. There are also private family baths here, also rare in Hyogo, for ¥4,000 an hour. Be aware that the laws governing baths are stricter in Hyogo than in other prefectures. Their website says if you want to use this bath with your wife and or children under 10 you have to bring your health insurance card that lists both of your names, and or your drivers licenses which show you living at the same address. We weren’t asked for either.

Far away from much of anything is this gem of a supersento. Yu-an was in the featured section of one of the 2008 edition onsen magazines. Thank to an extended weekend holiday at my work years ago I rented a car and made the 1 hour drive to Miki to find this place. It was well worth the drive. I knew I was out of the city when I entered as shoe locker didn't require ¥100, nor did the girls working the front assign me a locker. I could take whatever one I wanted once in the changing room. The restaurant, massage, and warm stone sleeping areas all looked great, but the high point of this onsen was its brown, clay rich outdoor bath with TV. The TV was situated so that if you wanted to ignore it you wanted. I enjoyed watching the opening scene "Vertical Limit," a cheesy Hollywood film about rock climbers, while cooling off on a big boulder. Access is a bit hard by public transportation so driving there is recommended. Keep in mind that the sign showing the turn off to get there from Route 20 is very poorly lit. I recently returned and really enjoyed the extra hot bath.

Hanayama no Yu has great soft water in the normal baths leaves your skin slippery soft and an equally good spring water in the rotenburo which is just as clear and soft feeling

There are two different bathing areas that change from men to women each day. They both have a wooden and stone motif. All of the wood looks fresh and alive while the stones show their age with grace. The tiles on the floor have just enough grip yet feel smooth and are great on your feet. The jet bath has my favorite single and sunflower styles.

As I said with the baths everything is really clean. It might not seem that way from the outside, and the golf driving range isn't the most beautiful thing, but inside everything seems right to me. It's not the biggest supersento and you might bump into someone on occasion. The sauna can fit 3~4 people maximum. Also soap from the showers pools up on the floor and doesn't drain well so make sure to rinse it off after you wash yourself to be polite.

I had a great chat with some of the customers in the sento. The view from the outdoor area is just a some rice fields and some forested hills. Not much too look at. There always seems to be a cool breeze which helps make this place seem fresh. It's easy for me to stay for a while, but for those with kids they might get bored fast here. It's too peaceful.

There is a golf driving range in the same building as the sento. They have club rentals if you want to hit a few balls. I've only been here in the afternoon and I have to say that a lot of the appeal of this onsen is how bright and refreshing it is in the afternoon. I totally recommend going there on a sunny day.

There is often a tent set up in the parking lot selling fruits and vegetables. I've found some great mikan there and some very good and very cheap strawberries too.

I've been very disappointed with this supersento considering that it could be better. The last time I was in the Thai themed half much of the plants were dead, the salt sauna's door was rusted and smelt strange. Thankfully, the Japanese side is much better with wooden and stone bath tubs of various sizes.

Decent, but not as good as the Kumano no Sato in Nishinomiya.

Small local sento a few minutes from Sanda or Sanda-Honmachi stations. One large bath and that's it. Interesting art projects inside the bathing area.

Small place might be closed now, or close anytime in the near future.

Takara no Yu is the only bathing complex of it's size in it's area. It's a popular spot, not only for it's fabulous hot spring, but for the well designed baths that contain that water. Outside the dominating feature is a large rock lined bath that abuts the dividing wall between the men's and women's sides. The lower half of this long bath is shallow normal water. The upper half is filled with the hot spring water at two different temperatures. The water is rich with minerals and has covered the stones with a thick brownish residue. Be careful with any white towels that come in contact with this water as it will stain them. Due to the popularity of the hot spring water here the baths have been remodeled three times since I first came to this super sento. The first remodel expanded the hot spring further into the main bath mentioned above and the second remodel added a new hot spring bath in the far corner of the outdoor area.

Be forewarned that this is mostly an outside affair with only one large bath inside. If you are going on a rainy day get ready for being outside in that rain. I find it relaxing being in the bath with the rain falling around me, but I can understand if people might not like it.

There is also a fun looking little outdoor yatai style bar restaurant in the parking lot area here. I've yet to eat there but it looks like great fun on a warm evening.
