Kongo no Yu has absolutely incredible water and its well worth the drive or the train trip to get to it. Rural onsen and supersento like this one are a gamble. Sometimes it's so-so, but sometimes you find a gem like this one. It’s also close to a train station making it more accessible for people without a car. Kongo no Yu is in the parking lot behind the Riverside Hotel that owns the onsen. Guests at the hotel can use the bath for free. The front and relaxing areas are fairly basic but well appointed with some toys for little children and good selection drink vending machines. Make sure to use the restroom before entering the changing room as there isn't one on the naked side of the baths. Besides some beautiful tables there the front and relaxing areas aren't anything really to talk about, the baths however had a lot of thought and planning put into them. The cold water bath (normal city tap water) is made of wooden slats and has an inviting handcrafted feel to it. The main indoor spring water filled bath was originally made with wood that shows through at parts but is mostly covered in mineral build up from the water. The bath drains into a gutter filled with small egg-sized black rocks which are also caked in the brown minerals. In the large shallow stone rotenburo the once ragged stones have been made smooth by the spring water depositing all its good stuff coating the rocks. This water is good. It's slippery smooth once you get in, so slippery it was hard to pickup my baby! The spring water has a milky-brown color, is semi-opaque and well heated. It’s just amazing spring water here. Try to check it out if you can make it this far from the city.

Located 15 minutes away by bus from the nearest train station, Kamokimi no Yu is deep in rural Nara prefecture. The building and surrounding garden has a modern, bare concrete design that, although somewhat of a juxtaposition, fits within its landscape well. The stone and other materials used in the construction of the baths is pleasing for the eyes and body too. A great deal of attention was paid to the design of the bathing area and this is accented by the water which is quite refreshing. The hot spring water has a slight brown tint to it and leaves the skin feeling quite good. Another key point of this supersento is the well designed waterfall bath which is placed in a shallow pool at the back of the outdoor  area. These baths are popular but hard to design into the bath area so they are rarely perfect. The height, double spigots, and low wall to hold on to makes it one of the most refreshing waterfall baths I’ve been in. Sadly the design that was lavished upon the bathing area, exterior and garden, but the rest of the building has a very hollow unused feeling. Not necessarily worth the trip if going to this supersento is your only reason for heading to this corner of Nara prefecture, if you happen to be in the area, however, I definitely recommend it.

There is a family bath and karaoke room available for use.

Nenohana Onsen is a great day spa just far enough from the city to make it fun for day trip, but also close enough to get to it in the evening for most people in the Keihanshin + Nara area. The rotenburo here is HUGE. Seriously huge. I've seen more than a few supersento advertising that they have the largest rotenburo in Kansai and always have been skeptical of them. Nenohana really does have a rotenburo that makes you go wow. The indoor bath is pretty big too! Oh yea, and the spring water here is quality. It is one of those places you just immediately know that you are lucky to have special spring water to bathe in. Not a long walk from Higashiyama station on the Kintetsu Ikoma line. It is just that far out of the way to make traveling out there for the water that much more enjoyable.

A short walk from Ikoma station and the only easily accessable sento along the Keihan line till you get to Nara. This is a gem. One of the places that have that living museum feel. Sadly, it's pretty worse for wear. Try getting out here before it closes down.

Part of the Gokuraku-Yu chain, their Yamato Kashihara supersento in Nara pref. is a fairly basic supersento. Sadly nothing popped out to me here, although it was featured in one of my onsen magazines. The key feature is a long rectangular stone lined outdoor bath which was much smaller than it appeared to be in the promotional photo. The entire bathing area seemed much smaller in comparison to the dining area and in general to other Gokuraku-yu supersento that I’ve been to. The water was nice but not impressive. Everything about this supersento was adequate. It seemed to be a wonderful place to spend an evening with the family if you lived in the area or came in from the more rural areas of Nara prefecture. The one amazing thing about this supersento, which I almost forgot, was its insanely powerful jet bath that was perfect for me, but could be uncomfortable for others.

Note: Gokuraku-yu has a membership card that gives a discount, but some cards only work at some outlets. If you don’t have a card you will have to pay the higher price listed. Anyone can become a member, but there is a fee.

Ryokan pearched high on the side of a narrow river valley. Great water. Amazing views of the river from the cliffside rotenburo. Great place to take a break if you are driving down to the Hongu area.

Small and friendly little sento with a very clean feeling to it. Nice little tile work along the back wall. Great old style lockers in the changing room that are a must see. The herb bath is a good bonus. Great location for a bath on the way back from a day trip to Nara. Very recommended.

Pretty big supersento up in the mountains between Nara and Osaka prefectures. Went there on a holiday and the place was packed. We had to wait for a parking spot. Being packed, and being a holiday evening, the manner of the other bathers and the atmosphere was much different than it typically is I hope. That said the baths are very unique. Part of it wanted to be a serene Japanese garden, the other part wanted to be a pachinko parlour. The main fixture was the large waterfall that fed a manmade river that went down the middle of the rotenburo area. Sadly you cant play in the river--signs were posted in Japanese, English, and Korean. The spring was so-so, but noticable. I hope to return someday and check out the Thai bath that was for the women's the day I went. Too bad it's so far away.

Amazingly beautiful view of the mountains from baths filled with the softest water in Kansai. You will not belive how slippery this water is. Amazing place and a must try for any hot spring fan. Sadly it is far far away from anything. It's worth coming here for a day of hiking and enjoying the nature. In the area there is also a restaurant, bakery and microbrewery. Worth the trip, but be careful getting there in the winter as the roads can be icy.

Much larger, newer and prettier than Ikoi no Yu across the street. The baths are located down a long staircase overlooking the river. The entire tub is done in wood and is quite large. The water is awesome and slippery smooth. It is one of those springs where you get hit with a wall of fragrant steam when you open the door. I was able to have the bath to myself and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Small classic simple bath with very hot water. There is a small garden view from the baths. One bath with a small fountain pouring constantly refilling the tub. Cannot emphasize how small this place was, I was very lucky to have it to myself when I went. I liked the water here better than An no Yu across the street.
