Interesting pricing system for capsules. If you want a power outlet and a TV you have to pay more. If you just want a power outlet or a TV you pay less. If you don't need either, you pay even less.

I barely remember staying here. It was on an all nighter with some friends from work. I do remember thinking that the sub-basement baths and saunas were good but not as nice as New Japan in Umeda.

Never have I ever been so interested in the design of a sento. Dotonbori Onsen receives a star for it's style, despite of how confused, eclectic and despondent as it is. Located just at the edge of a love hotel district in front of an adult video store and the National Bunraku museum, Dotonbori Onsen is lost in time. There are three stages to this onsen, visually speaking. The lower third is the classic sento tile. Browns, whites with floral motives a Spanish looking cross and something like your grandmothers doilies, plus the various basic coin sized tiles. These tiles are beautiful, but not so unique. It gets better as you go up. The middle third is the rebellious in your face stage. A giant tile mosaic of a fish on the back wall all in bright colors, the bright red tile that wraps around the central fountain that fills the main baths, the amazing wall that separates the men's and women's section with it's mosaic of multi-colored amorphous, lava-lamp splotches. It makes me wonder who designed these walls. Were they the work of trained artists, the architects or merely the owners own amateur, yet quite amazing, hand. The top third blends classic and modern together. The wall that encompasses the outdoor bath is done in beige coin sized tiles, with large stained glass windows in muted colors. The upper walls leading towards the main exhaust windows has a very simple square and rectangle motif done in what appears to be paint and concrete, reminiscent of some American abstract artist of the 60's. Now imagine all of this in a state of graceful, yet quite apparent disrepair. The bright red tiles of the central fountain have been washed stark white by years of flowing water. The sliding door to the outdoor bath is removed and propped up on the outside wall. The bath is exposed to the outside, but seemingly perpetually covered by a tarp. There are cracks in the windows and ancient looking dust high in the rafters. It's doubtful that this sento could ever be repaired to its apparent original luster. So go to this one while it's still around. Finally, the baths were nicely laid out and had a very unique feel due to their design. One of the jet baths even had a strength control, although it was broken. The water was normal, the showers were strong, and the atmosphere was wonderful. I would like to thank a reader for recommending this sento along with some others.

If you want to ride an elevator naked this is the place for you. Shimizu-yu is the only sento in the heart of the Shinsaibashi and Ame-Mura super hip shopping districts in Osaka. It’s just down the street from the Apple Store. Great place to start the evening before hitting the bars.

Small sento hidden behind a shotengai near Nipponbashi station at the top end of Osaka’s DenDenTown electronics store district. As it is one of the closest sentos to the stations in this area, its a good one to remember if you want to take a quick bath. The sento itself is really small. It has a decent selection of baths. The best one is the well fed cold water bath. The well water is soft to the touch and a great way to cool off on a hot Osaka summer day.

Tamatsuki Onsen is a popular sento open all night on Saturdays. Nice use of tile, baths are somewhat basic. There is a radon steam sauna and a radon salt bath that was not so hot that I enjoyed. The second floor sauna is amazing. Walking up the small narrow staircase the heat from the sauna gets you sweating before you even get to the door. That door is also TOO HOT TO TOUCH. I had to use my towel. Inside the tight L shaped room there's enough room for 4 or 5 people at most. The thermometer said the temperature was 115C! This was the hottest sauna I've ever been in and I doubt I'll find one as hot. Overall it was an interesting sento and worth checking out.

A great little secret for a night out in Umeda. The most convenient and affordable bathing facility in walking distance from Umeda.

Nakazaki-cho station on the Tanimachi line is actually closer, but by the time you change trains you could have walked there directly from Umeda.

Kobai Onsen (I hope I read that right) is a basic Osaka style sento south of Tenma Station. Nice selection of baths but nothing outside. Watch out for the unsigned electric bath that is in the herbal bath. You cannot see the electricity emitting pads because of the opaque brown water. Great tile work throughout the bath even if it has seen better days. Still it was very clean when I went. I enjoyed my time here and would go back if the chance arises.

This supersento located on the 7th floor above a pachinko parlor is a wonderful example of what a good supersento should be. The large rotenburo has a great view of the sky and the planes flying into Itami Airport. Even in the winter sitting in the tub baths looking up into the sky makes you feel like you're in someplace more tropical. The outdoor baths are rather heavily chlorinated, but I enjoy that smell.

Great saunas here. Strong and clean.

The interior baths are crystal clear, big, and inviting.

This is definitely a "beautiful skin" bath. Your skin will feel smooth and soft to the touch.

The gensen bath is about 35 degrees. Great for chilling out after heating up in the hot baths. Being a  gensen bath the carbonation is still in the water and you'll be covered in bubbles if you sit in there long enough.

Close enough to Umeda to make it convenient, Naniwa is an ideal supersento experience.

Rakutenchi is a small very busy local sento in a crowded Osaka neighborhood. The place was full of locals who all seemed to know each other as they chatted their way around the baths. The water was softened, and was piping hot in the main baths. The cold bath felt fresh. The small rotenburo filled with "Magma Onsen" treated water was small but nice. There's no view of the sky from the rotenburo as there's a panel blocking the way. The sauna looked small but clean and welcoming, no TV.

This is a good classic sento in a great location and one worth checking out, but this might not be the best sento for a first timer.

Magma Onsen is a common type of bath salt that is added to normal water just like you might do at home. It's probably the 2nd or 3rd most popular judging by how often I've seen it. The salts turn the water a reddish hue and has a mild fragrance to it.

A simple older sento in need of repairs but not dirty. The sauna had a bit of an odor and I didn't go in. The tile work has some nice flower designs. I liked the large stones set into the floor in a grid pattern with ceramic tile gutters. The changing room seems rooted in the day it was covered with a large mirror along the dividing wall.

Staff and customers seemed nice enough but indifferent.

The bath had to large metal poles bisecting it. They were great to lean on, stretch on and for doing water pushups.

A bright, happy, big and clean sento. Perfect in almost every way. The only bad thing is the very noisy sucking sound coming from the waterfall bath in the back. A somewhat unique layout with the cold water bath in the front. The main deep bath is made with large slabs of granite that has the smoothness that only comes after years of use. In the doughnut hole rotenburo there is a tile painting of a sea and island scene that had a very early 80's California style to it which I found very attractive. That rotenburo is the best point of this bath. The view of the sky is only up, but there's a big enough opening to feel the air. Separating the rotenburo from the main bathing area are tall windows that make it feel much wider. Shusse Onsen is locally known for being the bathhouse that one of the members of the Non-Style comedy group often went to a child. If you come with your child there is a small, but fun looking park, right in front of the sento to enjoy.

Tokiwa-Yu is a compact two story bathhouse. The second level is at the top of a steep staircase-some of the steepest stairs I’ve encountered. Overall it’s a good use of space in this smallish bathing area. Nice clean changing room and front with lots of ashtrays.

Sadly I found the water in the cold and salt water baths to be a bit murky looking. The other baths were ok, however. Tokiwa-Yu is a good backup if Hamura Onsen closer to Umeda is closed and you’re in the neighborhood.

I got a few strange looks here. It doesn't seem like many foreigners show up in this neighborhood. Something to be aware of.

Claims to be the first capsule hotel in the world. Could be true. Great big pool to swim around in on the first floor plus a HUGE sauna. On the second floor is a more typical bathing experience. On occasion a hidden rooftop outdoor bathing area is open. Great if you are stranded in Osaka after the last train has left, you need to spend a night away from it all, or you are just traveling through. If you just stop in for the 50 minute quick bath plan it is also pretty good as there is not much in terms of a normal sento in the neighborhood.

Perfect little sento nearish to Nanba making it a good place to know. Also it's open all day from 6am! The great radon bath and a very hot deep normal water bath make this one worth trying out. Lots of TVs to watch in the bathing areas. Check out their sister sento Tabeta which is the review just below this one.

Large sento that actually refers to itself as a “supersento” on their own webpage. This is one of the sento that were at the forefront of the transition to the current sento - supersento landscape we have now. This is also an open all night place so if you need someplace to chill (or boil) till 5am there you go. Baths are different on both sides but include a large outdoor area and monkey bars in one of the baths for stretching. Tabeta is a fun place and worth checking out the same with Healthy Onsen Sakuragawa their smaller sister establishment down the road (and the review just above this one!).

Located right in front of Tsutenkaku, the Osaka tower, in the middle of Osaka's old downtown. Radium Onsen is one of the best maintained Showa-era sentos, but there's more. The men’s outdoor bath has a great big Japanese garden and perfect view of Tsutenkaku. Not sure how good the women’s side is. Great location and a great classic Osaka sento feel.

Part of the renovation of this historically tough neighborhood in Osaka, this supersento is on the second floor of a supermarket and marketplace building. I wasn't sure what to expect when walking along the Nankai tracks through warehouses and old row houses. What I found was a newly remodeled commercial food market with this sento build on top.

The stairs, the signs outside, and design of the building was all very well done. Inside I was also pleasantly surprised. Lots of open floor space in the lobby. There's a big restaurant, a ganbanyoku (Korean-style heated stone resting area), and, of course a bathing area with a wide rotenburo.

The inside baths are well built with good basic yet clean feeling tile work. The jet bath maze was one of the largest I've seen. Outside the rotenburo is more like a covered gazebo. This is most likely due to it's closeness to residential towers and the an elevated freeway. So there's no great view of the outside or sky, but the plants make up for it and provide a great atmosphere. This is also a great place for people who like their baths bubbling. They have a large carbonated bath outside and a microbubble bath inside.

No natural hot spring, but the location, cleanness, selection of baths, and atmosphere all make up for it.

Amazingly huge. Called the world's biggest hot spring resort. This is like a waterpark that is open all year round. Spend hours in the bathing suit required mixed bathing pools and enjoy all the slides (rides sold at a seprate cost). There are play areas for children and, in the summer, a roof top outdoor pool. After all the fun there are two different themed bathing areas. One is Asian the other European. The water is from a hot spring source but I didn't really feel it. You go here for the slides and pools. Super fun and a must try for everyone.
