The first and main supersento owned and operated by the Nobuta 123 pachinko group. This is a grand palace built for bathing. It's huge and really enjoyable. Despite it's out-of-the-way location it was packed to the brim the weekend evening I went. It was also a kids event day that included a bath filled with rubber duckies. If you bring a young child in the baths with you on one of these rubber ducky nights, do not expect to try out many of the other baths. I was lucky enough to be able to return by myself after my wife finished her alone time so I could explore this bathing wonderland a bit more. I got to say, this is a Disneyland for supersentos. Its way too perfectly laid out. I did really enjoy it. Great range of temperatures in the baths along with some really quality well water filling them. Even the cold water bath was from a well. That cold water bath felt like a secluded mountain pond, just wonderful. The warm straight well water bath was crowded, but I got a chance to enjoy it a bit also. Try to get to this place on a off hour, no Sundays or national holidays like when we went.

Supersento attached to a golf driving range way out on the Osaka-Wakayama border. Very popular with the local people. All soft-water baths. Outside is a large rock lined bath that has many curves and gulfs to explore, including a very shallow portion. There is also a warm, carbonated bath that I really enjoyed. The main indoor bath has a shallow trough of cold water to soak your hands in while your body is in the standard 41 degree bath, something I have yet to see anywhere else.

Second closest sento to Kansai International Airport. I was amazed how retro this place was. It was only 280 yen to get in! Lockers are all numbered in old kanji like 1 is. The urinal had no flush to it. It was just a porcelain receptacle. No way to run water. Inside there was one bath divided into a shallow and deep section and a cold water basin. So the bath was not much to talk about, but I liked the old building it was in and the feel of the place was rather friendly overall. This felt more like a sento that should be someplace far, far in the boondocks not right next to the largest airport in Kansai. Not a place for the sento beginner but I think some enthusiasts might enjoy it.

Another secret bath far up in the mountains across from Kansai Airport. It's a bus ride up the mountain from Hineno staiton. From the bus stop you have to walk along the narrow mountain road about 150 yards to the entrance to this hidden spot. In Inunakiyama Onsen there are many hot spring ryokan but only Yama no Yu allows day use. The building is stoic and industural looking to say the least. Approaching it, I thought I was going to a factory or wearhouse. The open and price sign assured me I was in the right place however. I think I went through the rear entrance actually. There might be another way in if you walk further up the road. After paying the attendant on the top floor then going back down to the bottom floor to the baths. Only one bath here and a few faucets. There are no jets or anything--this place is about the water. The water is just full of yu no hana which are minerals and what not that is coming up from the earth with the spring water. It felt great and it has that unique onsen smell to it. The view of the river from the bath was also nice. This is a great amazing hidden bath that any fan needs to check out.

Two different baths here. The one in the betsukan, father down the hall, is bigger and better. Nice shallow bath in relaxing dark brown and black. No real rotenburo, but there’s a nice atrium like area with a window that opens into a garden. The sauna is brand new, as of 2013, and has that great new sauna smell. The older second bath is much smaller and older with a garden view. Can get very crowded if a group of guests use either of the baths all at once. The water feels dry and powdery in the bath but smooth out after you get out. Great for relaxing before a flight, or washing off after a long flight.

You can drink the spring water here. There’s a cooler in front of the elevators. In the baths there’s also the excellent Bayu shampoo, conditioner, and body soap.

The hotel connected to these baths is basic, but clean and very comfortable. It has pickup and drop-off service to Kansai Airport, Rinku Premium Outlets, and near by train stations.

Nagomi is a recently remodeled, bright and very clean sento within layover distance from Kansai Airport. From Rinku Town it's a 10 or 15 minute walk. Everyone was very cheerful. I loved the laminated news articles hung up in the rotenburo to read while soaking. The bathing areas were small, so you'll have to do a bit of dodging people or waiting for a bath (mostly the small cold water bath). The changing room does have more space however. I really enjoyed my afternoon bath here.

Rinku no Yu is a smallish supersento located just across the bridge from Kansai Airport. It's in the shopping center with the giant Ferris wheel. The spring water is ok and somewhat noticeable, but not too special. Besides being very convenient to the airport, the great rotenburo that has a view of the airport makes this a place to try out.It is unsure if Rinku no Yu has a hot spring or not. According to one post on a Japanese review site they had either rename the spring from “natural hot spring” to “rock salt hot spring” to avoid city taxes. If this means they are adding salt and minerals to normal city water or still using their well is unclear. Rinku no Yu’s website makes no mention of 天然温泉 (natural hot spring).

I mention often the birth of the supersento and those sento that exemplify the change over that has happened. Sechigo no Yu is basically a smaller supersento in size and diversity of baths, but in style it is very much a sento. The tiles and signs throughout the building are very much those that you would see in a normal sento. Sechigo no Yu is by no means a normal placeit is awesome. First off it is open 24 hours on weekends and holidays. The spring water is definitely naturalnot the best but not bad in any way. Among the myriad of baths there is a cold air sauna here which I love finding. It is a bit of a walk from the station but accessible by public transport. It is also close enough to be an option for people going to Kansai International Airport.

Somewhat strange feeling supersento in Kishiwada. Great cold sauna. More like a big sento than a supersento. This place uses a two tiered charge system. If you just want to use the normal indoor baths there is a lower price. For the full price you get a plastic widget that you can use to open a door and access the better baths. The showers in the back also have free shampoo and body soap. I was indifferent to this place. Next door is a Marugen ramen restaurant which has some super spicy ramen which was the highlight of the evening.

A perfect sento. There are so many great things to say about Shinmaneki Onsen I don’t know where to start.

The water is from a hot spring well that has calcium. You can really feel the effect of the calcium in the water. The water itself is clear with a low osmotic pressure but a fine sheen of calcium build up can be detected around the tubs. After a few minutes you begin to feel it on your skin. The water here is never slippery or slimy like some baths. It feels more like a dry dust. The feeling stays with you long after you get out. The water is also quite hot. I ended up sitting in shallow spring bath for a few minutes then getting out to cool down with the quite cold water from the basin by the door before entering the bath again and repeating. My daughter enjoyed playing in the shallow bath and area around it. It was a good space to keep an eye on her too.

The saunas are on the second floor with a cold water bath on a semi-balcony with some open air access. In the winter it was way too cold, but looked promising for the summer. Pay attention to the great flower tiles on the wall along the stairway up. They are some of the best sento tiles I’ve seen. Very retro and very cute. There are two saunas: steam and dry. Only the dry sauna requires an extra payment.

The changing room has a constantly running stream of spring water for drinking. The water  tasted somewhat salty and warm. It was good. The posted information about drinking the water is as follows in a loose translation.

              1.           Talk to a doctor before drinking spring water like this.

              2.           Each time you drink the spring water only drink between 100 ml and 200 ml. Don’t exceed 1,000 ml in a day. Drink the water 30 to 60 minutes before having food.

              3.           Don’t drink the water after dinner or before going to bed.

              4.           If you get diarrhea stop drinking the water. (duh)

              5.           The water is good for people who are constipated or have intestinal diseases. It’s not good for people with heart disease or high blood pressure.

The sign also asks you not to use the hot spring fountain as a sink and don’t pour anything down the drain.

The two baths are different and change every day. I will be back to, hopefully, see the other side.

Make sure to check out the sculptures made out of 5 and 50 yen coins by door as you enter or leave.

The sento is located in a cute shopping district and has a large, for its size, parking lot for both cars and bicycles. I wasn’t able to explore the area as much as I wanted, but it looked like a promising place to walk around and explore.

Taishi Onsen is one of those quasi day use but it's also a ryokan places that attracts a lot of bathing for health and recuperation guests. The amazing very high quality spring is only poured into an indoor and outdoor bath, but with water this good you don't need a large selection of baths. The indoor bath has a giant mineral cone converted into a fountain that was taken from another natural spring. Something that the front desk admitted to me could not happen today. I walked from KaminoTaishi station to the spring and it took a good 40 minutes. There are free shuttle busses also from KaminoTaishi and Kawachikokubu Stations both on different Kintetsu lines. Discounted entrance after 5pm. Overall, Taishi Onsen great day trip from anywhere in the Kansai area.

New very fancy supersento. Inside and outside the decor and architecture is clean and modern looking. In the rear is a giant faux rock wall that has three waterfalls, multiple trees and a rainbow (hence the name ). The main large bath is upstairs and somewhat small. The best baths are a row of Shigaraki made egg shaped tubs that look out on the waterfall the bottom of the tub is porous and air is pumped through the bottom giving the tub a carbonated water effect like none Ive ever experienced. The hot spring here is decent. Not the best spring ever, but very comfortable and used in a good way. This supersentos most unique feature is the 8 family baths that are available. The baths are advertised on light boards much in the same way rooms at a love hotel are. Prices go for 2,900 to 3,900 for an hour for up to 3 adults. On the holiday night we went the baths were all in use. This is a great option for a guest from abroad who wants to experience a hot spring but doesnt want to bathe with other people.

Tara Onsen or Tarui Spa as the sign says is the most southern sento in Osaka Prefecture. It’s a good one too. I have to admit that the locals seemed pretty surprised to see a non-Japanese person there. I ended up having a lovely conversation with a few of the locals and their friendly kids in the changing room. The sento baths are of average size but more than you would expect this far away from anything else. It is about 45 minutes thanks to having to head to Izumisano then doubling back on the Nankai Main Line from Kansai International Airport but it is definitely one of the places you can consider for an airport area bath.

Uguisu no Yu is a supersento in Tondabayashi in the shadow of the PL Tower. It gets good reviews in sento magazines so I thought it was worth checking out. The rotenburo area is built into a cliff side. With baths and a sauna on 4 levels. Sadly the view is of a Joshin parking lot and generic Japanese suburban sprawl although there are some so-so mountains in the distance to gaze at.

The baths are all well built. I liked the very shallow sleeping bath. The concrete bottom made it feel like bathing in a fish pond. At the very top is a Himalayan rock salt bath that felt wonderful. One of the best salt baths I’ve ever been in. According to one of the staff all of the baths are filled with spring water with the exception of the cold water baths. The water did feel somewhat like a onsen but I did not like how vague the signage was. Materials used throughout the building were chosen with care but some of wear and tear was showing. The cedar bath was lined with marble. The only cedar was on the outside and a cedar step in the water which was covered for protection I guess by a plastic mat. The indoor baths were fine. Nothing too deep here. None of the jets were built to hit the upper bath also. I liked the choice of a cold and colder water bath. The main dry sauna had a TV that was way too small and only viewable by half of the seats.

The bath has a lot going for it, but it’s far from perfect. Still good place if you live in the neighborhood. Not sure if it is worth driving across Kansai for, however.

There is a Marugen Ramen shop on the main street leading to Uguisu. Good place for dinner.
