The famous building that is said to be the inspiration for the bath from the film "Spirited Away" and the setting for Natsumi Soseki semi autographical novel "Botchan." Dogo is one of the most famous onsen in the nation. Inside the giant bathhouse are various levels of service at various prices. The basic bath is on the first floor and offers a basic single tub. The building itself is quite amazing and highly recommended for any fan of the book, film or onsen but be forewarned this is a very popular tourist attraction. You won't find a quiet bath here. For more ¥1,250 you can go to a smaller, less crowded bath with service that includes a yukata, green tea, senbei, a tour of the museum in the building and access to a tatami room to relax in.

Tsubaki no Yu is the other public bath in Dogo Onsen, and the best one. This is where the locals go. Don't expect the amazing building and all the glamour of the Honkan down the street here, just expect a great bath. While the Honkan is beautiful, it is crowded with tourist (myself included) and people who don't always know how to take a bath. Tsubaki has some of those people of course, but the number is far fewer. Inside is a simple large changing room leading to a single very large shallow bath filled with spring water of the same quality as the Honkan. Even when busy there is enough room to spread out and enjoy the amazing, healing water here. Go to the Honkan first, if you haven't before, then come here.

Very quality onsen in a stoic, rural hipster style. Lots of great concrete bathswhich I am a fan of. The warm sauna was one of the weirdest things I have seen. I did not get it at all. Everything else was great. I liked the many plants in the large rotenburo area. In the restaurant/lobby area there is a cool used book store and some interesting goods for sale. Be careful walking here on the little busy road from Busshozan Station, especially at night, as there are no sidewalks and lots of fast cars.

I had a weird feeling about your place but YMMY. One of the few sento in Takamatsu. The remodeled exterior is attractive.

Only available for hotel guests. There's a single shallow bath that's large and refeshing with a few windows that look out over the road leading to Marugame Station. Faucets took a while to get warm water and the pressure was low. Needs a good remodel just like the hotel as a whole. Hotel was decent at a good price, the room was cleam, and service was polite, as to be expected from APA Hotels, but this one was the most beat up of the chain that I've been to.

Marugame's version of the Pokapoka Onsen is much, much different than the one in Kobe. This one is more like a large sento. Pastel tiles provide the decoration in the two level, two rotenburo bathing area. It felt somewhat like Karato Onsen. I got a few glances from the older guys there, but nothing rude. This bath is off the map for tourists and I don't think there are many people like me in the area. The website says there is a hot spring and the lower rotenburo had a hot spring feel, but there were no signs for it anywhere. Great selection of jets also. Recommended if you are in the area and can get to it. Leaving the changing room I wanted to check with the girl working the front if there was a natural hot spring bath here. Coming out of the noren in front of me was a fully nude grandpa just standing there. I took a few seconds to realize what was going on. The girl was trying to compel him to go back into the changing room as was another staff. I tried to help for a secon but figured that I should just leave. People coming to Japan always are afraid of being naked infront of everyone. It doesn't matter beacuse everyone else is naked... the only time it's really--and I mean REALLY--noticable is when there's one naked person in a room full of clothed people.

Shiori Onsen is part of a rural community center with a farmers market, restaurant and bath. The design is very modern for the area with the baths built into the side of a small valley. The indoor and outdoor baths look across the valley at the mountain on the other side and the road in the bottom. The spring water here is effective but that is all I remember. (I'm writing this review 3 years after going.) In the small rotenburo another bather told me the water was brought in by truck from two wells. One for the rotenburo and one for the indoor bath. Each bath had a unique feel and that was enjoyable. The picture I got of the onsen information sign said there were two springs used in the baths here, but on the website now only one spring is listed and called a hitou (秘湯 / secret bath).  I guess they don't want to publicize that the water is trucked in. The spring is listed as a cold water spring also so the water is definitely heated and recycled. That said, I would like to go back to Shiori if the chance arises. The landscape was really beautiful and I enjoy the baths. Also, in the JA shop they had a bag of dried garlic and goya chips that was awesome.

They swap the men's and women's baths on the first Wednesday of the month.
