Review: Shin [新] means new but this new bath was opened in 1927. It looks like it would have back then. One small deepish bath is along the dividing wall and a few bathing stations ring it on the outside wall. The changing area and bathing area are both quite small. Like all the other baths in Shimosuwa, it is hot. As there are no other baths but the main one, there is no relief for those who cannot take the heat. There is a small water faucet and cup to drink some municipal water to cool off a bit but that is it. Very friendly staff in working the front entrance.Of the 3 places in the Shimosuwa Onsen three bath route this one was the smallest and the quality of the water seemed to be a bit lower. That said it was the 4th super-hot bath I took in 5 hours so my skin might have been a bit numbed by then. Haha! Of the 3 places, however, this was the most aesthetically pleasing. Review: Classic hot spring in a hot spring village somewhat hidden down an alleyway. Beautiful wood and glass in the entrance from the era with some newer remolding done on top. The spring is presented in a single oval shaped bath lined with small tiles with washing stations on either side. The spring is hot but not too hot to be uncomfortable. Water is added to cool the bath. Inside the bath the heat feel is the most noticeable as is a very slight sulphur smell. The skin feel is most noticeable once you get out and dry off making you extremely soft. Definitely worth a visit for anyone interested in older sento.This was the first bath I took in Shimosuwa but I still think this was the best one. It is also the closest to the station. If you only have time for one, skip doing the route and just come here.When you come in make sure to look on the other side of the drink vending machine for the entrance ticket vending machine. You do not give cash to the attendant here. Review: This is the hottest bath I have experienced in my 15 plus years in Japan. The first bath is the so-so hot bath at 44 ˚C, the other bath doesn't say how hot it is. I like hot baths but this one was painful. I was able to get in and sit down in it for 30 seconds or so and I am proud of that. Somewhere in between this bath and the 44 ˚C one is my sweet hot bath spot. Outdoor is a cooler 39˚C or 40˚C bath to relax in. Sadly, no cold water. That would have been awesome. It is a simple bath house so unless you are really into feeling the natural heat of the water here, I might skip this one. Like the other Shimosuwa baths, the water is clear, and you can really feel the effect after you dry off.The hot bath today was 47.3 ˚C. They cool off the baths by mixing the cooler 30 ˚C well water with the hotter 56 ˚C well.Amazing place if you are in the mood for a boil!Of the 3 bathhouses on the route this one is the newest and hottest. The outdoor bath, however, is the coolest option among all the baths available at all 3 locations.

Review: Shimosuwa is a hot, hot spring. There is a sign by the entrance telling the daily temperatures of the main bath, the outdoor bath, and the showers. Even the showers here are spring water. Thankfully they have a municipal cold water wash basin for rinsing off and cooling off. However, that water is so cold! This is an onsen village for people who like it hot. When I was there a young 5-year-old boy could not enter the bath because it was too hot. He dipped his feet in to the main indoor bath a few times but was, nope, not getting in that! On the day I visited the bath was 44.5 at the hottest. Thankfully, the temperature of the outdoor bath was more reasonable and quite relaxing. Ko-yu is the biggest and has the most diverse selection baths of the 3 bathhouses on the route.
