Very close to the station and a good option if you are heading back into the city after hiking in the hills around Kurama.Visit Date: July 2018

Fudo Onsen

Japanese Name: 不動温泉Prefecture: KyotoCity: Sakyō WardAddress: 京都府京都市左京区左京区北白川地蔵谷町1-244Category: Hot Spring FacilityWebpage: https://www.fudouonsen.com/Price: ¥1300Holiday: ThursdayHours: 10:00-19:00Review:A hidden, unique bath up in the hills between Kyoto and Otsu. I hiked my way here and rode the bus back into the city. There is some parking also. This is a different style of bathhouse. You enter in what looks more like a small minshuku and get greeted then given a table to sit at and served some tea. At that table you leave your bag and anything you do not need in the bath. The bath here is quite small so you might have to wait to get in. There is no outdoor bath, no sauna, no cold water. It is just a tub filled with some mysterious, unique water. Radioactive baths like this typically attract people who are looking more for health benefits along with relaxation and you will see that here. I recommend going here as long as you know what to expect.

Very local, I got a few "Who's that gaijin" looks from the bathers. Understandable given the tourism in Kyoto now. Great post hike bath.

Review: Kyoto sento are a thing. Well, Kyoto is a thing. Especially if you are in the core of the city when Kyoto becomes even more Kyoto. This sento just down the alley from the major Gion access point of Nijyō station making it right in the core of the core. That said, this place was pretty normal. Now I've been in small sento but this one might be the smallest one yet but also, and fascinatingly, one well equipped with all the baths. There is shallow, deep, bubbles, jets, treated, and cold in 3 tubs. Now each of these tubs could fit two people OK and three in a pinch it’s that small. The dry sauna which I peeked my head into could seat, maybe 4 people but I wouldn't enjoy that. Even the changing room has space saving measures with the only toilet (Japanese style) located in the entryway before you enter the sento proper. Interesting place, especially for sento people, but if you visit try to go during the off-peak times as this place is small! Visit Date: August 2021

*Closed* Tenzan no Yu - Kibune

Japanese Name: 天山の湯Prefecture: KyotoCity: Sakyō WardAddress: 京都府京都市左京区鞍馬貴船町18-2Closest Station: Category: Supersento w/ natural hot springWebpage: http://www.kibune-tenzan.jp/
Review:One of the most beautiful supersentos around. Two different sides changed daily with some great views of the river below. It closed suddenly in January of 2017 for unknown reasons. While the spring water was trucked in from its related supersento in Arashiyama the quality was not bad. They didn't hide this fact, but they didn't really advertise it either. Bummer.
