Review: I could not hear the grandpa in the reception telling me not to use the ticket machine that had a sign saying to use the ticket machine because the tv was way too loud. So, when he got mad at me for using the ticket machine, I was more than a bit miffed. More than just the ticket machine is broken here. A lot of the fixtures are also broken. The extremely small and shallow cold-water bath also has an unpleasant smell to it. That might be the well water, however. This is a “natural hot spring” in the loosest interpretation of the term. They have a cold water well and heat that water for the bath. Not noticeable in the water or after. The shallow outdoor bath had the green color of the eco-cooler juice of my childhood in the USA and the décor looked more like what a hotel on mainland Asia would call a Japanese bath than the reality. This is the only choice for the downtown area of Miki, and I would go here if this was all I had access to, but it is sad that this place could be a lot better than what it currently is. ReviewA very unique hot spring feeds the beautiful baths here in rural Miki. The carbon dioxide spring is one of the rarest and strongest of it's type in Japan. You cannot spend too long in the hot spring baths here because of the carbon dioxide being emitted by the spring water. Signs posted all over the baths say don't stay in for more than a few minutes at a time. The problem is that there is so much carbon dioxide coming off the water you don't breath in enough oxygen and can faint.Besides that the gasses that could kill you, the water feels great. The landscaping in the outdoor area is beautiful. There are also private family baths here, also rare in Hyogo, for ¥4,000 an hour. Be aware that the laws governing baths are stricter in Hyogo than in other prefectures. Their website says if you want to use this bath with your wife and or children under 10 you have to bring your health insurance card that lists both of your names, and or your drivers licenses which show you living at the same address. We weren’t asked for either.

ReviewFar away from much of anything is this gem of a supersento. Yu-an was in the featured section of one of the 2008 edition onsen magazines. Thank to an extended weekend holiday at my work years ago I rented a car and made the 1 hour drive to Miki to find this place. It was well worth the drive. I knew I was out of the city when I entered as shoe locker didn't require ¥100, nor did the girls working the front assign me a locker. I could take whatever one I wanted once in the changing room. The restaurant, massage, and warm stone sleeping areas all looked great, but the high point of this onsen was its brown, clay rich outdoor bath with TV. The TV was situated so that if you wanted to ignore it you wanted. I enjoyed watching the opening scene "Vertical Limit," a cheesy Hollywood film about rock climbers, while cooling off on a big boulder. Access is a bit hard by public transportation so driving there is recommended. Keep in mind that the sign showing the turn off to get there from Route 20 is very poorly lit. I recently returned and really enjoyed the extra hot bath.
