Tatsuno City - たつの市

I thought this print in the entrance with the boy sitting on the cow was really cute. It is from some fable but I cannot remember it.

Review: A basic supersento in an industrial part of the town. No natural hot spring here but there are some high points. First of all, this is pretty small for a supersento, but I think the size fits the area well. The indoor baths are noticeably shallow. Outside there are a few tubs, some laying around baths, and a large rock lined bath and a hinoki bath has some additives placed in it. The most outstanding aspect of this supersento is the intense steam sauna. It is almost impossible to see inside and gets to some nearly uncomfortable temperatures if you stay in there for so long. The locals seemed to splash their chairs and bodies with water from the lukewarm basin near the entrance pretty roughly. After spending a few minutes in this bath, it was easy to realize why. There is a lovely shrine right in front of this supersento and I highly recommend checking it out if you make your way here. I walked here after doing a super long hike and that was fun, but really this supersento is well out of the way from public transportation. It is about 30 minutes walking from Tatsuno station on the Sanyo Main Line. I would not go out of my way to do that just for this place. However, if you are in the neighborhood and coming by car, it is a good option in an area with few other options. Visit Date: April 2021

Review: This is a municipal bathhouse located in the Shingū area of Tatsuno city inside the local welfare hall on the second floor. Next door are rental stages and meeting rooms for community use—so very Japanese.  Being municipal there is not much decoration and no restaurant or snacks however there are a few vending machines. This is a straightforward bath. There are only about 6 showers and one large bath with a few jets and bubbles. They call it an herb bath and have a net of yomogi steeping in the water. There is a garden but you cannot go outside, it is only for looking at. Tickets are for sale from a vending machine on the first floor near the main entrance. In the same area there is also a small michi-no-eki with some local produce and products for sale.Note: During the 2021 Golden Week COVID19 lockdown entrance is restricted to Tatsuno City residents only and hours are changed. Visit Date: April 2021

Review: This is a city own and operated sento connected to the local medical center and elder care facility. I always love seeing what can happen when a city government puts money into a place like this. The bathing area was bigger than expected but lacked a good place to cool down. Lots of well-sourced stone gave it a clean and stoic atmosphere, but it also felt slippery under the feet, so walk carefully. The outdoor area was a pleasant surprise but a bit boring. I was disappointed by the tight changing room. There was a huge, open tatami room to relax after your bath. I used it to do some writing as I waited for the rain outside to calm down. Not really worth going out of your way for, but it is a great example of what municipal bathing facilities can be. Tatsuno City runs two baths open to non-residents, but it seems they are also not well known outside the city. These two options and the above-average supersento in town provide excellent chances to wash off after spending a day in this city full of history and nature.
