Quite small with different baths from warm to extra hot seem to change depending on the day and which bath is for which gender. I was a little rushed to get in the water change and get in line for my bus back home so I kind of rushed this one.Visit Date: September 2018 *Hot Spring Data*Spring Type: Sulfuric acid spring - 硫酸塩泉

This very well designed and run facility. It feels like a newly built sento in Kansai, so if you feel that the older, smaller hot springs turn you off, head up to this one. Great place up on the hill also with frequent bus service. Review:Hotel with a quality hot spring on site. Got a stamp from them for my Beppu Hot Spring Passport. The spring was good quality and in a very funky room with some palm tree and beach inspired wallpaper. Feels like what a nightclub in Ulaanbaatar would look like, but with a hot spring and no trashy EDM in the background. There are two different baths and I only was able to visit one. The hotel also is great on the cost/performance scale. I loved my little single room that worked great for a solo traveler. Friendly staff too!

Hoyoland

Japanese Name: 保養ランドPrefecture: OitaCity: BeppuAddress: 大分県別府市明礬5Type: Hot Spring FacilityWebpage: http://hoyoland.webcrow.jp/Price: ¥1100Holiday: NoneHours: 9:00-20:00
ReviewHoyoland offers mixed and gender separated bathing in a large muddy pond. It’s awesome. The mixed bathing is awesome, but don’t be a dirty old man. The water and the mud is the best part really. The bottom of the main bath is just this thick hot spring infused mud that you have to work your way through. It feels like something that would cost hundreds of dollars at a day spa in Europe. You can enjoy the mud baths and stay in the enclosed gender separated parts of the bath if you don’t want to go outside. The main bathing area is just like a normal sento and gender separated so you can wash off all the mud with no problem. In the main muddy baths water is opaque so no one can see anything that you do not knowingly expose. This is not a bathing experience for the timid, but it is one that is absolutely unforgettable and so enjoyable.Very simple Japanese style rooms are available for ¥7,500 with dinner and breakfast per person. The rooms do not have en suite toilets and shower but do include 24 hour access to the main bathhouse and free access to the rest of the baths during their operating hours.
Update September 2018: Still one of the most amazing places in Japan. The feeling of the mud is just incredible. Do not be a creepy guy please.

Outside and the entrance you can still see the Taisho era building including an amazing little booth for collecting the entrance fee. Now it is just a storage area as fees are placed in a collection box--like most of the smaller neighborhood baths. Going down the stairs is like entering a new world. The high vine covered windows letting a gentle light in, old wood with layers of pain exposed by time, this bath feels like an old artist's studio. The water was also outstanding, but in Beppu that is a given. The wooden plug to allow the hot water in and hoses to add tap water to cool were also fun to experiment with.Visit Date: September 2018 *Hot Spring Data*Spring Type: Simple spring - 単純温泉

Takegawara Onsen

ReviewTakegawara Onsen is the “have to” spot for Beppu. People always claim Dogo Onsen to be the onsen from “Spirited Away” but in my mind this is the real deal. Dogo is very touristy, Takegawara is real. Despite being such a tourist attraction it’s still just ¥100 to get in. This is as real as you can get. The water is piping hot and a pleasure to get in, even if it takes a few minutes. In the summer a short bath with many breaks is the order of business. There is also an Ibusuki style sand bath on the site for ¥1,000 but I didn’t try it. All three baths, the men’s, women’s and mixed sand bath are all from different springs (!?). If you make your way to Beppu, you’ve got to try Takegawara at least once. Seriously, why would you go to Beppu for any other reason?
Update September 2018: Had a fun chat with a local here as we laughed at two Korean boys that were clueless about using the baths. When I first went to Beppu, there were so few foreign, and especially, asian tourists. It is a different experience now and the famous places like Takegawara have seen an increase of use.

Yayoi no Yu

Japanese Name: やよいの湯Prefecture: OitaCity: BeppuAddress: 大分県別府市元町1Type: Hot Spring FacilityPrice: ¥200Holiday: NoneHours: 24hr
ReviewYayoi no Yu is an automated hot spring. There is no staff on staff. You are there by yourself well yourself and the video cameras. Don’t worry the cameras are only at the door and in the hall. You put 200 yen to open an automated door that lets you into a small hallway men and women are separated but there’s not much to stop you from going into the women’s side other than a video camera. The bath is very simple but made out of comfortable stone with a divider to keep a hot and not so hot side. A few faucets on one side and a row of boxes for your stuff are all that’s there. The water is obviously a hot spring and feels great for ¥200. Despite the lack of staff everything was clean the morning I took my bath. I guess the other customers have good manners. One guy left as I came and I think there was a women in the other side but no one else was there. The best part of this bath is maybe having it alone to yourself for ¥200.Other reviews in Japanese weren’t so keen on Yayoi, but I just love the concept. Walk by and check out the free foot bath out front at least.
