ReviewOne of the most famous baths in all of Japan is the sand baths of Ibusuki. The hot spring comes up from underground and soaks a sandy beach. After changing into a yukata (provided) you can go to the beach and get covered by the hot sand by an attendant. Once you get buried in the sand it feels like being in a sauna. Most people stay in the sand for about 10 minutes. It's a good feeling but if you get an itch it's really hard not to scratch it. After a good sweat in the sand you can go inside and wash off in the baths. Your rental yukata should be soaked by the time you get out. There are special showers to get the sand off before entering the normal bathing area. The baths themselves are quite good and the onsen minus the sand is very comfortable.There are many ryokan nearby or Ibusuki can be visited on a day trip from Kagoshima city. The unique black and white painted "Ibusuki no Tamatebako" limited express train runs 3 times a day to the resort from Kagoshima-chuo station. Inside the train there are large seats and sofas along with a children's play area. There is a free foot bath in front of JR Ibusuki station.Wait times for the sand bath can be up to 120 minutes on busy days or during the sunset. Check their Japanese webpage for more information.
